Australian opal is one of the world's most rare and valuable gemstones as there are many more diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds than opals. Here I auction a rare gem quality, pure crystal core, bolder opal prong set in a hand-crafted sterling silver ring I especially designed. This large opal is a midnight ultramarine blue with flashes of magenta red as it turns into the light. The video below gives some indication of the stunning presence of this piece.

This is a 100% natural solid opal. It is not a doublet or triplet, nor has it been treated with acids and other chemicals. This is true gem quality rare boulder opal from Yowah in central Queensland, Australia. The movie below shows the gemstone revolving and occasional torch light flashing on some surfaces. This might give you an idea of how this opal behaves under different artificial lighting. Remember however, nothing competes with an opal in natural sunlight!

Quality boulder opals have two distinct and sometimes separate qualities.

First they can be nature's paintings using a mix of red and black ironstone, fossilized wood, golden opalized clay set in a stained glass configuration, that produces the startling 'matrix'. Sometimes the caboshon or dome of the opal is pitted and this is called an inclusion. Most opals either top quality or otherwise have such inclusions. It is often a consequence of the different opalized materials that come into conjunction to make the picture that nature intends. It also is a guarrantee that the opal is natural.

The second quality is that of the 'irridescent crystal' that divides nature's painting into its parts. This crystal can be layered horizontally or vertically. Horizontally it produces broad 'flashes' of color. Vertically it produces either intense florescent changes within the matrix or pinfire starlight.

All the best opals excell in all or a singular regard, and some often combine two or more effects. These are the gems of quality and are the ones I look for and feature on ebay. There are many opals in the marketplace but at Cowdisley we only buy the artistically outstanding. They allow the imagination to soar, romance and drama to amplify, and brutal reality to disappear. Wear one in a ring or pendant and you will carry the true history of the earth in living color. This is such an opal!

One other caveat here... opals appreciate strong light, be it strong incandescent or natural sunlight, then they give their utmost which is often never surpassed by any other gemstone.

These photographs are extreme enlargments made under sunlight or very bright lights with a macro lens so you can observe the gem's clarity, and of course, a magnification of any flaws. Monitors vary so I have little control over the color on your screen only to say these were made for a gamma corrected flat screen monitor with colors as close as possible to the original.

All gems have been inspected by a qualified gemologist and are guaranteed as natural. We at Cowdisley are committed to top customer service, and quality material. Email is encouraged with any questions before placing your bid. We will try to respond to email within 24hrs.
